Meet Vasilios (Billy K) Kontogiannis, Deployment Engineer
About Billy K: If there’s a network closet on campus that’s gone from chaos to pristine, there’s a good chance Billy K had something to do with it. A cornerstone of the NGN project since 2021, Billy brings more than 30 years of experience in telecommunications, infrastructure, and project management. His career spans major institutions like UBS, IBM Global Technology Services, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley, where he led large-scale deployments and tackled complex infrastructure challenges with precision and grit.
Billy K’s NGN Journey: As a member of the NGN Alpha team, Billy has been on the front lines of Yale’s network transformation. He leads campus-wide closet surveys, evaluates power and capacity needs, and oversees everything from cabling cleanup to the installation of new Cisco switches. He’s also instrumental in migrating buildings from legacy systems into the NGN environment and ensuring outdated equipment is properly decommissioned. In short: if it plugs in, powers up, or needs to be upgraded—Billy’s on it.
The Team: Billy thrives in the hands-on, high-impact nature of deployment work, especially when it comes to turning cluttered IDF (Intermediate Distribution Frame) and MDF (Main Distribution Frame) spaces—the central and satellite hubs that manage internet and data connectivity within a building—into clean, efficient, high-functioning hubs. Leading a team of technicians, he collaborates closely with engineering to ensure every migration is executed seamlessly, and that everything from desktops to wireless access points is fully operational when the dust settles.
Innovations and Achievements: Among his many contributions, Billy is especially proud of the work completed at the Becton Engineering and Applied Science Center. Faced with challenging infrastructure conditions, he and the team navigated obstacles with creativity, adaptability, and a steady hand, delivering a successful outcome where precision mattered most.
Valuable Lesson: For Billy, success always comes back to teamwork and communication. He knows that even the most technically complex migrations run smoother when people stay aligned, informed, and supportive of one another.
Beyond the Office: Outside of work, Billy enjoys spending time with his wife, Lisa, and cheering on his daughters—Cristina, Melissa, Gina, and Anastasia—in their many activities and accomplishments. He’s also an avid golfer, enjoys landscaping, and has a soft spot for animals.
Favorites and Fun Facts: A classic rock fan through and through, Billy also roots for the Mets, Jets, Rangers, and Knicks. When it comes to food, he’s all about Greek cuisine and a good slice of pizza. In the summer, you’ll often find him enjoying time Upstate with family.
